  3. between 1925 and 1953. He started riding 1920
  4. and rode 4,870 winners from 21,834 mounts
  5. before retiring 1954 and taking up training.
  6. He rode the winners of all the classic races
  7. but only once won the Derby (on Pinza 1953).
  8. In 1947 he rode a record 269 winners in a
  9. season and in 1933 at Nottingham/Chepstow he
